May, 2003 Front Deck Construction
Well, Carpenters we are not. However, Wendy and I (with
invaluable help from our friends Chris and Jane) decided to rip out our brick
front steps and build a small front deck. All work was conducted during
Memorial Day week, 2003. For your viewing pleasure, here is a photo essay
to commemorate the project.
Our home before construction began. Please notice
the front steps -- no railing, and easy to slip during the long Montana
winter. Also, the steps just make the house look more like a big box.
To start, I had to demolish the brick steps in place. It was a
snowy day in late May. Wendy and I did all the work with a
sledgehammer and spud bar.

The demolished remains of our old brick front steps.

What a drop!
|
I am 6'4". Now that the demolition was complete, we needed
to get cracking on the rest of the project.
|
Our house sans steps. As Max said repeatedly over the week
"There are NO steps! We broke the steps!"
|
The following Thursday, Memorial Day weekend. Chris, Wendy and I
manage to attach the ledger board, main beam and rim joists.
|
By the end of Friday, all of the joists are attached.
|
Chris and I like our power tools!
|
Saturday, Chris and I begin attaching decking.
|
The temperature exceeded 100° F on Saturday. Chris and I
neglected to use sunscreen or a hat. What a sunburn!
|
By Saturday afternoon, we had a deck! No steps or railing, but
we still had two days before we had to be back at work.
|
I am proud to say that I cut my own stair stringers. We were
probably more worried about this than any other part of the whole
project. By Saturday evening, with the stair stringers cut, we
called it a day.
|
Sunday. The stairs get attached, and we add steps.
|
Wendy attaches railings and balusters.

Wendy shows off an almost completed deck.
|
|

After. With balusters, the deck completes the entire house. Next project
-- paint the house!
